Our Therapeutic Approach

Our Therapeutic Approach

At Centretown Psychotherapy, generally speaking, we tend to offer a client-centered and psychodynamic approach to our psychotherapy and counselling services. Both client-centered therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy are more non-directive forms of talk therapy.  We trust that the psyche will take us where we need to go.  We also believe that you have the innate ability to overcome your problems and reach your full potential. Our role is to provide you with a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can explore and better understand your own thoughts and feelings. We encourage you to trust your own inner wisdom.

We accept all clients just as they are and provide support no matter what you are going through. Additionally, we are always genuine with you and offer you empathetic understanding. By understanding your thoughts and feelings, we develop our therapeutic connection—which is vital for positive outcomes in therapy.

Both psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapy and client-centred therapy are well-established, research-supported approaches that help people understand themselves and create lasting emotional change.

Psychodynamic therapy is grounded in research showing that exploring underlying emotional patterns, attachment experiences, and unconscious processes can lead to meaningful and sustained improvement in mental health. Studies have found that psychodynamic therapy is effective for depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and personality concerns—and that its benefits often deepen over time as clients continue to internalize insights gained in therapy. By helping people recognize recurring themes in their relationships and emotions, psychodynamic therapy fosters greater self-awareness and flexibility in how they respond to life’s challenges.

Client-centred therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, is supported by extensive research showing that a warm, nonjudgmental, and empathic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive therapy outcomes across all approaches. This model emphasizes unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness, creating a safe environment in which clients can explore their feelings, make sense of their experiences, and move toward self-acceptance and growth. Studies consistently confirm that when people feel deeply understood and accepted by their therapist, they are more likely to experience meaningful and lasting change.
